2023 L.A.S. Vino Chardonnay 'Barrels of Metricup'
VINEYARD
The third time making wine from this incredible, certified organic vineyard in the heart of Metricup, Margaret River. Twenty three year old 'gin-gin' chardonnay grown in a sandy loam topsoil over a mottled clay subsoil. (In contrast to Willyabrup's dominant forest loam soils with mottled granite).
WINERY
The fruit hand picked, chilled, hand selected and then whole bunch pressed prior to fermentation in ten barriques, two of which were new. The wine undergoes a full malolactic fermentation with fortnightly lees stirring prior to maturation for 10 months in barrique prior to blending. The wine is bottled un-fined with a light filtration
WINE
A complete contrast to the 'Wildberry Springs' chardonnay due to ; sub-region, soil, climate, and fermentation vessel. The allure of creating a new very different chardonnay was too hard to pass up. A wine made with certified organic fruit and treated in the winery 'organically'.
In Margaret River the days are warm due to where the vineyard sits in lattitude and the nights are cool due to the pure afternoon breezes flowing off the Indian ocean. This impacts the wine. It has warmth, weight, richness and flavour but also an incredible freshness with flavours of citrus, lemon, lime, curd, peach and stonefruit.

'It’s always a delight to try Barrels of Metricup next to its sibling, Wildberry Springs. Different, as they should be, yet a thread of L.A.S Vino style links them. This is more textural, layered with flavour and coming out rather savoury, although there’s some dried pear, lemon and grapefruit, too. More oxidative notes add complexity alongside preserved, salty lemon and rind, white miso and grilled almonds, clotted cream lees and honeycomb.'

'Fragrant spicy peach, grapefruit and wheaty bouquet; lively acidity refreshes the palate. Generosity allied with finesse. Superb now and should build more complexity with age. A full-bodied chardonnay with a nicely balanced touch of grip.'

2023 L.A.S. Vino Chardonnay 'Barrels of Metricup'
'The sandy loam soils of this mature vineyard play out a significant point of difference from other chardonnays in the region. It was all naturally fermented in barriques of which 20% was new and then went through with regular lees stirring and 10 months in oak. It’s alive with energy from the first burst on the nose. Layered with flavours of lemon curd, stone fruit and peach dominant stone fruit. Fine lingering acidity ensures it remains on track. Terrific.'

"Of the two excellent chardonnays on offer, the other being Wildberry Springs, this seems tighter, more linear and very citrusy – especially laden with grapefruit flavours. It’s a classy wine, satisfying, too, starting with wafts of lemon blossom, curry leaves and sea spray. A fine layer of texture works across the palate, yet led by juicy acidity and a pink grapefruit flavour, which adds to its moreish character."

'Attractive bouquet of white peach, grilled nectarine, flint and raw cashew. Bright and fresh, excellent intensity and drive, plenty of mealy nougat complexity building towards the finish line. Finishes long and mealy.'

"It has notes of preserved lemon, green apple skin, salted peach and layers of brine. This has nori sheets and cracked toffee and even a far-off whiff of coffee grounds. Very pretty, and the tannins hang around for a while after the wine is gone, contributing an extra layer of chew and grip to the texture. Very nice, it is savory, spicy and textural—all cool things for a Chardonnay to possess. I have supreme confidence in Peterkin's ability to craft high-quality Chardonnay; the wines are always possessed of high drinkability, too."

'This is quite rich, but holds its line of freshness too. Creamy texture, like orange cream or similar, some nougat, green apple, flicers of almond in the mix. Its a gentle, supple wine loaded with righteous chardonnay flavour. Lots of character to sinks one's teeth into. Feels serious and premium. Beautiful drinking'
