2022 L.A.S. Vino Pirate Blend
Pirates were the outlaws, the one’s who broke the rules , the fighters, the one’s who lust after life with gusto. They drank with a passion that was truly magnificant. For pirates liquor was the saviour; it soothed the heat of the sun and made the dark nights brighter. This blend is an ode to those salty sea dogs we left behind and those still sailing. Those willing to break the rules and live a life according to nothing but passion and the pursuit of personal desire.
The 2022 vintage was a fantastic vintage with warm weather leading to even ripening and good yields. The Pirate Blend contains three Portuguese varieties: Touriga Nacional for structure and depth. Tinta Cao for aroma and finesse. Sousao is the darkest berry I know, and you know what they say, the darker the berry, the sweeter the fruit. All the fruit was hand picked from 40 year old dry grown vines in Yallingup. The wine was both bunch and berry sorted prior to softening for 18 months in barrique
Tasting Notes:
Ruby red in hue. The wine displays notes of sweet spice, cinnamon, clove, plum compote, blueberry and dark chocolate. Soft silky tannins with an exotic mix of red berry fruit sweetness and cocoa on the palate. Long, complex and an intriguing finish.

'Peterkin has taken a deft approach to gently coax the delightful fragrances and flavours from these varieties. So many things happening on the nose with spicy, cloves and light plum with a subtle chocolate coating. It's such a vibrant high energy wine with bright fruit flavours lifting from the palate.'

The combo of touriga nacional 65%, tinta cao 32% and the 3% splash of souzao makes for an approachable and excellent red for pirates or anyone else for that matter. These varieties are rare in Margaret River, yet Nic Peterkin sources them off a 40-year-old site in Yallingup. It’s such a good wine, unpretentious, a little earthy, a little rustic, with lots of dark fruit, cocoa, currants, sumac and fresh herbs in the mix. Full bodied and juicy, with grainy, pomace-like tannins plus bright acidity, which means this needs hearty fare as a friend.

'Deep ruby, shining with purple tints at the rim. Blueberry, vanilla oil, and cumin seed aromatics. Palate is full and the dark fruits have great intensity and presence. All that power is judiciously matched to fine, yet powerful tannins that compress without cutting the flow so it carries incredible length. Towards that long finish there’s an explosion of exotic spices that takes it to another level'

'A slurpy, rollicking ride of red berries, mulberry compote, dark chocolate, panforte, dried herbs, ground mixed nuts and toasty spice elements. Go forth! Has a touch of that sense of liquified Xmas pudding, though not with the ribald sweetness, here decidedly dry, somewhat chewy, still quite plush and rich, but with train tracks of tannin tightening screws. Feels good to drink .'

'Deep ruby red in the glass. Fragrant blue and purple berries with cinnamon, clove, and violets on the nose. A deep core of blackberry fruit intermingles with vanilla and cinnamon while hints of black pudding add a darker tone. Great length and persistence with ample tannins that remain cleverly disguised from entry to finish.'

2020 L.A.S. Vino Pirate Blend
"This is such a beautiful mix of the Portuguese varieties; touriga nacional, tinta cao and sousao. It suggests sweet fruit but delivers with a restrained, dry savouriness showing a mix of dired herbs and spices and typical dark syrupy chocolate. The colour is very dark, which is largely a product of the sousao. The tannins have a dry chalky feel which offsets the plush fruit vibrancy."

"Spiced notes of vanilla bean and licorice lead into an almost impenetrable core of inky dark fruits. With air, gamey notes evolve and a velvety core of fruit fleshes out against the fine sleek curtain of tannins. This is tightly wound and powerful. It has a lovely sense of freshness and a delicious Dutch licorice finish that teases the tastebuds"

"Rich and soft though you’ll find vapour trails of flinty, granitic tannins here too. Scents of ripe dates, dark berries, mocha, cola. Flavours in a similar zone. Good flow and lovely inky character through the wine, gently palate staining as it finishes. Pleasure zone stuff."

For pirates music was the saviour; it soothed the heat of the sun and made the dark nights brighter. A blend of sea shanties. 'On you're boat'
